Thermage FAQ

This patient information is intended to supplement, not replace, consultation with your physician regarding laser hair removal. Please talk to us if you have additional
questions or if you have questions that may not be answered here.

Does Thermage work on my color skin?
Thermage treatments are good for all skin types. No matter the color or texture of your skin, you can have a Thermage face lift or body sculpting with immediate and progressive visible results.

How long does Thermage last?
Unlike some procedures that are immediate but quickly fade, Thermage continues to work as the body naturally responds to the initial treatment for up to six months. At first, there will be little noticeable change but within the next weeks the improvements will begin to show. Thermage deliver its results by stimulating the cells with radio waves in order to produce new much more elastic collagen, which is why the visible results are immediate and continue for up to six months.

How many sessions will I need?
Usually, individuals will see results after just one treatment and those results continue to improve as the skin heals. Results will vary from person to person. Individuals should consult with a cosmetic dermatologist to discuss how many treatments will be needed to achieve the desired results. The entire procedure will take just a couple hours, with no swelling, bruising or pain experienced in most instances.

Is Thermage safe?
Thermage is a safe procedure. After being studied in thousands of patients in the USA, Thermage treatment has shown minimal adverse effects. The procedure is not considered risky, and anesthesia is usually not used. In special circumstances, mild sedatives may be used.

How long before I can return to normal/work?
Most patients may return to their routine daily activities the same or following day. Since the thermage procedure doesn’t harm the top layer of skin, there is no recovery time. During the healing process, the treated area may become slightly lumpy, but this side effect usually goes away within a few days. The lumpiness is a sign that the body has begun to heal. Swelling and bruising may also occur on the treated area, although uncommon.

Does it hurt?
Before the thermage procedure, we apply a topical anesthetic cream to the area of treatment. The cream is applied an hour before the procedure, and it numbs the skin. The topical cream prevents the patient from feeling pain during the procedure. If the patient is especially susceptible to facial pain, painkillers or a mild sedative may also be used. Anesthesia is usually not used during the procedure.

It is typical for the patient to feel some heat and flushing. After the procedure, the treated area is cooled, heated, and cooled again to make the patient more comfortable. If this cream is not applied evenly, or is not left on long enough before the procedure, the patient may feel some pain during the treatment. But most patients report feeling no pain, although they feel some heat as the radio frequency energy is applied to the area.

Radio waves? How do I know it really works?
Thermage is a tried and tested method for firming and toning the body, is approved by the FDA and has been used by nearly half a million satisfied patients. It has also been reported on by numerable TV news outlets and featured on shows like Oprah.

What’s the difference between Fraxel and Thermage?
The technologies are somewhat similar but treat different issues. Fraxel targets the lowest layers of the skin using laser technologies and Thermage targets the collagen beneath the skin using radio waves. Fraxel is better at dealing with skin problems such as scarring, spotting, etc. where Thermage is better at tightening the skin and dealing with loose skin/elasticity.
