It is important that patients, who are being treated for weight loss, are monitored by a bariatrician. A bariatrician is a licensed physician (Doctor of Medicine [MD] or Doctor of Osteopathy [DO]) who, as a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP), has received special training in bariatric medicine- the medical treatment of overweight patients, obesity and its associated conditions. Dr. Knighton has been a member of the ASBP since 1996. While any licensed physician can offer a medical weight loss program, members of the ASBP have been trained and qualified through extensive continuing medical education programs. Bariatric physicians can specifically design individualized medical weight loss programs that are tailored to the needs of individual patients. If needed, they can modify the programs as the treatment progresses. A physician-supervised medical weight loss program may be the safest and wisest way to not only lose weight but maintain the weight loss long-term.
